The BiteStrip™ is an invaluable diagnostic tool when treatment planning...
- ...for your bruxing patient who doesnt know he bruxes.
Many patients are unaware that bruxing is taking place. The BiteStrip study can serve as an educational tool to show the patient the presence and frequency of bruxism.
- ...for your bruxing patient whose bruxing is caused by a malocclusion.
This type of bruxism may be treatable and could be resolved by correcting the malocclusion.
- ...for your bruxing patient who requires a restorative procedure.
A restorative procedure will be more effective if bruxism is identified and the wear, fracture, or mobility caused by bruxism is taken into consideration.
- ...for your bruxing patient with sleep apnea.
The forces generated from bruxing can cause significant damage to an appliance, especially during sleep.
- ...for your bruxing patient with temporomandibular joint pain. Pain associated with temporomandibular joint dysfunction can be caused by bruxism.
Simple to Use, Reliable Results- Placement Before sleeping, your patient simply places the self-adhesive device on the skin surface of the cheek directly over the masticatory muscle.
- Activation An individual threshold/baseline is established by the patient who performs at least two maximum clenches (MVCs) by biting on the wooden spatula provided. Bruxing events are captured at a >30% of the mean MVCs.
- Data Gathering & Analysis The EMG electrodes and amplifer acquire and analyze the jaw muscles EMG waveforms in real time.
- Results Each bruxing episode is counted and recorded internally. A score representing the range of events is recorded on the permanent chemical display.
- Diagnosis Test results should be interpreted by the doctor and test scores will indicate the existence and frequency of bruxism.
During clincial trials, the BiteStrip performed with unparalleled accuracy when used in conjunction with sleep lab equipment. Results are reliable, the doctor can use the BiteStrip to show the patient that bruxing is happening and exactly how often it occurs. The test can be maintained as part of the patients permanent medical record.

Award WinningThe BiteStrip was awarded the 2004 Medical Design Excellence Award in the category of dental instruments, equipment, and supplies. Sponsored by Medical Device and Diagnostic Industry Magazine, the awards recognize innovation and excellence in the design of medical device products.
The judging panel noted the BiteStripinnovatively addressed the problem on a cost basis much cheaper than a sleep lab, provided a permanent record of the test, and was conceptually elegant.
Advanced Technology
The BiteStrip is designed with...
- Two pre-gelled skin EMG electrodes and an EMG amplifier which acquire EMG signals from masticatory muscles.
- A micro CPU (central processing unit) that runs real-time acquisition and analysis software to detect and count bruxing episodes (the number of times the masticatory muscle clenches).
- A permanent chemical display unit that shows the results.
- A lithium battery which operates the system.
